Dedication This whole book is among other things an attempt to repay the debts I owe to the authors of hundreds of novels and to many others, including my late mother, who have influenced every sentence in this book; who are immanent in every moment of this book.
Yet, I wish explicitly to acknowledge my HUGE debt to four writers in particular – Ted Hughes (e.g. Birthday Letters inspires the beginning of Chapter 2 and the title of Chapter Six, inter alia); T.S. Eliot (e.g. The Waste Land inspires the beginnings of Chapters One and Three, inter alia); F. Scott Fitzgerald (e.g. This Side of Paradise inspires the second half of Chapter One and indeed the whole book’s theme); and Donna Tartt (e.g. Chapter Five is a tribute to The Secret History (as indeed in some key ways is the whole book) and The Mutual Friend). Also, I mustn’t forget to thank Seán Ó Faoláin (and William Shakespeare) for inspiring chapter six’s final sentence.
