Lysenko — The Technical Briefer
For the first years of the Donbas war, Ukraine’s face on the military-briefing side of the information front was one man: Colonel Andriy Lysenko, spokesman for the Ukrainian Defence Ministry and Information-Analytical Centre of the NSDC. In the Luhansk Well he appears 62 times.
He was the Ukrainian counter-archetype to Marochko’s Folksy Colonel.
The Archetype
The Technical Briefer — the military spokesman whose discipline is the refusal of Folksy register.
Where Marochko delivered precise numbers with folksy confidence, Lysenko delivered approximate counts with institutional restraint:
“Russian-backed militants carried out 94 instances of fire in the past 24 hours.”
Measured. Declarative. Attributed-to-Russia. No numeric flourishes. No exact-number performance.
The Asymmetry
Read the two briefers side by side:
Marochko: Exact numbers (147, 94, 32). Institutional-liturgy attributions (“Official representative of the People’s Militia of the LPR”). Photographic evidence promises (“PHOTO” / “PHOTOS”). Moral condemnation of Kyiv built into every bulletin. Ceremonial performance of the fake-state.
Lysenko: Approximate numbers or modest integers. Institutional attributions grounded in Ukrainian constitutional authority (“Anti-Terrorist Operation Headquarters”). Evidence promises tied to JCCC, OSCE SMM, international monitoring. Moral condemnation restrained, factual. No ceremonial performance — just technical report.
The Category-Distinction
The asymmetry teaches the distinction:
Marochko’s briefings are Disinfolklore items.
Lysenko’s briefings are military reports.
Both are propagandistic in the broad sense (both serve state interests), but they operate on different cognitive registers. Marochko’s Mana loads the message; Lysenko’s message arrives without Mana-loading, because Ukrainian Disinfolklore discipline refuses the Mana-installation move.
The Inheritance
Lysenko served through 2014-2016 and was replaced by successors (Vadym Skibitsky, Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, and later, during the 2022 invasion, Oleksiy Hromov). Each successor inherited the Technical-Briefer archetype. Ukrainian military communications have maintained register-discipline consistently. This is a cumulative strategic asset.
The Lesson — Register-Recognition
Counter-Disinfolklore works slowly, by disciplined register.
It does not match Russian drama. It does not amplify Russian grievance-rhetoric. It does not manufacture mirror-archetypes. It performs the boring work of the Technical Briefer, day after day, year after year.
Western coverage throughout 2014-2022 frequently cited both Marochko and Lysenko as “spokesmen.” The symmetric citation flattened the distinction.
The counter is register-recognition. When you encounter two spokespeople from opposing sides, ask:
- Do they both perform fake-state liturgy?
- Do they both use exact-number magical-arithmetic?
- Do they both promise photographic confirmation?
- Do they both load the grammar with Mana?
If one does and the other does not, the category-line is meaningful.
Ukraine’s Enduring Asset
Lysenko and his successors did not load Mana. That register-discipline was, and is, one of Ukraine’s enduring counter-Disinfolklore assets.
