Hope, Weaponised

“Putin is quietly signalling he wants peace.” How many times have you heard this? From editorial writers. From think tank analysts. From former secretaries of state. And every single time, the “signal” is the same: a carefully planted leak. An anonymous Kremlin source tells a Western journalist that Putin is “open to negotiations.” A back-channel emissary whispers to a European foreign minister that there is a “window.” A Russian diplomat at a conference drops a hint about “flexibility.”

These are not signals. They are operations. They are Reflexive Control operations designed to achieve a single objective: to slow down the supply of weapons to Ukraine.

“Putin is quietly signalling he wants peace” is the third greatest Disinfolklore troll — after “Don’t Poke the Bear” and “Escalate to De-escalate.” The first creates paralysis through fear. The second creates paralysis through pseudo-strategic reasoning. The third is the cruelest: it creates paralysis through hope.

The “peace” troll is the cruelest of the three. “Don’t poke the bear” creates paralysis through fear. “Escalate to de-escalate” creates paralysis through pseudo-strategic reasoning. But “Putin wants peace” creates paralysis through hope. And hope, weaponised, is the most dangerous thing of all — because it makes good people complicit in their own inaction.

If you believe — even partially, even provisionally — that Putin might be open to peace, what do you do? You hesitate. You say, “Let’s not send those missiles yet — we might jeopardise the negotiations.” You say, “Let’s give diplomacy a chance.” You say, “We must not escalate — there may be an off-ramp.” And while you hesitate, while you give diplomacy a chance, while you search for the off-ramp, Russia kills. Every day of hesitation is a day of killing. The “peace signal” troll does not end the war. It extends it. It purchases time for the meat grinder to operate.

Look at the data, not what Russia says it is doing. Russia has never, not once, made a peace proposal that did not amount to Ukraine’s unconditional surrender. The “signals” are mirages — Reflexive Control operations designed to exploit the West’s reflexive desire for diplomacy. See also Peace Signals: The Third Greatest Troll.
