Polish Mercenaries and Foreign Fighters — The Outsider-Bogey
The Luhansk Well contains 17 direct “foreign-fighter” references and 16 specific “Polish mercenary” items. Let me name what they do.
The Corpus Evidence
3 July 2017, lug-info.com: “Kiev placed about 120 Polish mercenaries and 30 tanks near S…”
18 April 2018, lug-info.com: “Kiev sent foreign snipers to the area of Katerynovka — People’s Militia.”
The Archetype’s Logic
Step 1 — Import an Outer-Realm villain. Ukrainian soldiers cannot, for the purposes of Russian Disinfolklore, be Ukrainian. If they are Ukrainian, they are “brothers” (brotherly-peoples archetype), and attacking them is archetypally illegitimate. So Russian-backed media imports foreign antagonists — Polish, NATO, Western — who can be attacked without activating the brotherly-peoples inhibition.
Step 2 — Specify the nationality to match inherited grievance. Polish is strategically selected because Russian-Polish historical grievance runs deep — the 1612 Polish occupation of Moscow, the partitions of Poland, the 1920 Polish-Soviet war, the Katyn-massacre dispute. Polish-as-villain activates a pre-loaded archetypal hostility in Russian-speaking audiences. The selection is not random.
Step 3 — Count precisely. “About 120 Polish mercenaries and 30 tanks.” The exact-number liturgy performs truthfulness while offering no verification path. The specificity manufactures plausibility.
Step 4 — Locate them at the contact line. The foreign fighters are always reported near Ukrainian-held villages adjacent to the occupation. They are never named, photographed, captured, tried. They are structurally Night-Raider archetype — shadowy, present, shape-shifting, un-indictable.
The Slot-Based Archetype
The Polish-Mercenary archetype is a Legitimacy Inversion of the highest order. Ukraine’s defensive forces become, grammatically, foreign invaders operating within Ukrainian territory. The actual foreign invaders — Russian regular forces, Wagner contractors, Chechen kadyrovtsy, Buryat conscripts — become, grammatically, local defenders of Donbas. The inversion is complete.
And the archetype scales. After 2022, the “Polish mercenary” framing was replaced with “British mercenary,” “American mercenary,” “French Foreign Legion,” “Latvian intelligence officer,” “Canadian sniper,” “Georgian volunteer.” The Foreign-Fighter template is infinitely refillable with whichever nationality suits the day’s grievance-activation. The archetype is slot-based.
The Counter
Name the actual nationalities. The International Legion for the Defence of Ukraine (founded February 2022) contains documented volunteers from ~50 countries. They enter Ukraine legally, are contracted by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, fight under Ukrainian chain-of-command, are subject to the Geneva Conventions. The Foreign-Fighter archetype dissolves under this documentation — but the documentation must be made public in the targeted countries, to counter the archetype’s local-political work.
