The One Trick Pony — Russia's Perennial 'Opposition' Character

The Stock Character

For a century, we have been used to the stock character of type “Russian Oppositionist.”

As in Baywatch, in every generation since the Bolsheviks, a new human has occupied the role of “Chief Russian Oppositionist.” As in every generation, the stock Disinfolklore character leading the “Russian Opposition” sucks all the energy, all the world’s attention from the true opponents of Ruschism.

Today 42 million Ukrainians, without the weapons they need, are putting their lives on the line to defeat Ruschism before Ruschism defeats all of us.

Centre Ukrainians, not Ruschia’s stock “Opposition Character.”

Ruschia is a One Trick Pony in its creation of a shadow game involving “Legit Ruschist Dictator” and “Russian Opposition Leader.” Meanwhile, the real action takes place on another stage — today in Ruschia’s Killing Fields in Ukraine.

KGB 101: How the Trick Works

The mechanism is old and simple:

Arrest, detain, persecute, poison the “Opposition” Ruschist. West falls for the troll. Distracts West from whichever genocide Ruschia happens to be executing, stoking, abetting.

Then send them out across the world to argue for: sanctions relief, a Marshall Plan for Ruschia, innocence of “ordinary” Russians, Putin’s corruption, or the redeemability of Europe’s last imperialist project.

We, wanting to believe in a Cinderella imperialist Russia which finally redeems itself, fall for the troll in every generation. Meanwhile the genocidal imperialism continues day after year after century.

The Price of Admission

The price of admission to our mental category of “Good Russian” is two-fold:

Be exiled by the Ruschist state. Let’s face it, the Ruschist KGB state is so afraid of its shadow anyone can be exiled — doesn’t mean just because they hold up a blank sign in Red Square that they share our values.
Model our values by criticising our democracies and every now and again voicing support for Ukraine. Remember how we fêted Ruschist imperialist Solzhenitsyn.

It’s very easy to become Russian “opposition.” This does not mean those branded as Russian “opposition” are not working for Russia’s interests.

Prisoner Swaps: Russians for Russians

While two million Ukrainians are forcibly disappeared inside Ruschia, Germany and America swap KGB agents for KGB agents — Russian so-called “Oppositionists.”

Ruschia laughs at our inability to see that in swapping Russians for Russians, Germany and America are selling out two million Ukrainians.

The only opposition to Ruschism is Ukraine.

Recently exchanged Russian “Opposition” leaders told Newsweek that Ukraine should stop hitting Russian oil refineries. “Strategic geniuses” in the Navalny team want a Marshall Plan for Ruschia while not yet understanding that ALL paths to reform in Ruschia lead through Ruschia’s utter defeat in Ukraine.

Individuals and Their Archetype

A note on personal bravery. The individuals who have occupied the “Russian Oppositionist” role — Anna Politkovskaya, Boris Nemtsov, Alexei Navalny, Vladimir Kara-Murza, Garry Kasparov, and others — have in many cases shown genuine personal courage. Politkovskaya documented Chechen atrocities under threat of death. Navalny returned to Russia knowing he would be imprisoned. Who knows what pressures are exerted on them to make them perform as they do.

The deep point is not about the individuals. It is about the archetype.

Even when the person inside the role is brave or sincere, the role itself serves Russian state interests. The bravery is real; the archetypal function is Russian Disinfolklore. The stock character absorbs Western attention that should go to Ukraine. It frames the war as Putin’s personal project rather than a centuries-long imperial pattern. It demands we feel sympathy not for the victim but for the perpetrator’s “brave dissenters.”

This is the “Russian Opposition’s” conjuring trick.

The Functional Test

Not all individuals personify the archetype equally. Apply the functional test:

Does the figure centre Ukraine — or centre Russia?

Navalny’s personal bravery was impressive — “though he was killed anyway, did he speak out much about Ruschia’s murder of hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians since 24th February 2022?” Had Navalny spoken out daily against Ruschism’s sacrifice of Ukrainians, and then been murdered — now that would have been a Russian “Opposition” character perhaps worth eulogising.

Navalnaya at the European Parliament: “I dispose of Ukraine by saying ‘everyone is used to the war.’ I don’t say that the SOLE way of defeating Ruschism is to help Ukraine win. No. I focus all the blame on Putin and his criminal gang.” She did not mention imperialism. She did not call for Ukraine’s total victory. She wanted a better Russia, not a defeated Ruschism.

Kara-Murza’s strategic objective is to evoke sympathy for the “ordinary” Russian people — while 1.2 million “ordinary” Russians have unlawfully entered Ukraine since 24 February 2022 and murdered hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians. His goal is to undermine the certainty that economic sanctions against Russia and its people are the right thing to do.

Beware of the Russian “Oppositionist” who speaks once or twice about Ukraine, but who spends the rest of their time bashing Western leaders for NOT being tough enough on Ruschia. Russian “opposition” often targets the same Western democratic leaders and institutions under the guise of concern trolling — attacking the same targets as Ruschist government Disinfolklorists.

The Opposition Bloc: The Archetype Inside Ukraine

KGB tactics love setting up the stage with fake “Opposition.” They even created a pro-Russia political party in Ukraine called “Opposition Bloc” — reportedly at the suggestion of Trump’s campaign manager Paul Manafort, led by Putin’s godfather Medvedchuk.

After Yanukovych fled Ukraine in 2014, his Party of the Regions was re-archetyped as “Opposition Bloc” — stealing the word “opposition” itself. As late as 2018, with the help of Medvedchuk’s media empire in Ukraine, Opposition Bloc fooled 40%+ of Ukrainians that it wasn’t a Russian operation. After President Zelenskyy’s government banned the Disinfolklore propagation apparatus in the form of Medvedchuk’s media channels, support fell off — and after the full-scale invasion it disappeared completely.

The same archetype deployed internationally (Navalny, Kara-Murza) and domestically (Opposition Bloc). The same One Trick Pony.

The Mana of Coercive Control

We’re in an abusive relationship with the stock Russian “Opposition” character.

First, Russian “Opposition” mimics their own torturers, and wife-beaters everywhere. Second, they exonerate ordinary Russians and blame the West for their own war of choice. Everyone gasps! Third, they roll back and say the opposite. Their Big Name champions in the West breathe a sigh of relief.

Such jolting positioning reeks of the Mana of Coercive Control. Constantly diverging positions characterise paleo-male, manipulative authoritarians. You want to believe they’ve turned over a new leaf…

The Telegram Revolution (Already Written)

The next iteration is already visible. When Ruschia’s current leadership falls:

Russia’s new leader will instantly model themselves as a “liberal” by restoring access to Telegram. That is the true purpose of shutting it down. The “revolution” will be branded “The Telegram Revolution.” Durov will be made minister for communications or defence. Ruschia’s attempt to copy Ukraine.

A new Russia will be archetyped. Through Disinfolklore. And breathless articles in western media about how a New Order has been established. The millions of Russians who participated in the murder of over a million people in Ukraine are as innocent as the people they murdered.

Kompromised leaders will campaign to let Ruschia back into the community of nations. Its people have suffered enough. Paul Manafort has already made a presentation on the campaign to brainwash us.

Look at its new generation of iPhone-wielding Telegram-using non-complicit population! It was all Putin’s doing! The war wasn’t our fault!

I could write the script myself. How? Same troll every new leader for the past 200 years. Same families of Chekists/KGB been in charge of Ruschia for 200 years. Same genes. Same memes. Communism, Empire, Russkiy Mir: old wine, new bottles.

Russia is a One Trick Pony.

Heaps of people — though hopefully our leaders won’t — will fall for the troll.

The Rch Adjudication

The Rg / Rt / Reg / Rch / Rit / Rd cryptotypic semantic signalling system — the Indo-European root for right, rule, order, sovereignty, truth — is immanent in the vocabulary Russia’s fake “Opposition” claims to defend: Sove-Reign-ty, Secu-Rit-y, Te-RRit-o-Ri-al In-Teg-Rit-y. And it is immanent in the word A-Rch-e-type itself.

The Ethical Discipline adjudicates between genuine rearchetyping and fake “counter-archetyping.” Apply Dumézil’s three functions: does this figure’s advocacy promote Ukraine’s sovereignty, security, and fertility/prosperity? If Opposition Bloc advocates surrender to Russian occupation, it fails all three. If genuine Counter-Disinfolklore promotes Ukraine’s freedom from occupation, it passes all three. The Counter

Centre Ukrainians, not Ruschists, Useful Idiots, their marks, or Ruschist patsies.

The key to a liberal Russian future is Ukraine’s expulsion of Ruschia from 100% of Ukraine.

All roads to Ruschism’s defeat run through the killing fields of Ukraine. Focus on platforming Ukrainians, not Ruschia “Opposition” who have zero power to destroy Ruschism (even if they wanted to).

When you encounter a figure branded “Russian Opposition,” apply the functional test:

Do they centre Ukraine or centre Russia?
Do they demand Ruschia’s total military defeat or merely Putin’s replacement?
Do they acknowledge centuries of Russian imperialism or blame one man?
Do they argue for sanctions relief or for increased pressure?

If they centre Russia, they are personifying the archetype — regardless of their personal bravery.

The only opposition to Ruschism is Ukraine.

The lineage: Solzhenitsyn → Sakharov → Kasparov → Navalny → Kara-Murza → [next]. Same role, new human, every generation.

The One Trick: Jail/Martyr them. Then send them out to argue for sanctions relief, a Marshall Plan, innocence of “ordinary” Russians, or the redeemability of Europe’s last imperialist project.

The counter: Centre Ukraine. Always.
