The First Nuclear Occupation in History

Russia occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant on 4 March 2022 — the first military occupation of a nuclear power plant in world history. The commander told staff: ‘There will be either a Russian land or a scorched desert.’ 150+ nuclear workers were subjected to enforced disappearance. The chief diver was tortured and murdered. Workers were forced to sign Rosatom contracts. Weapons were stored inside reactor buildings. MLRS were launched from within the plant perimeter.

As OSCE Environmental Security adviser for Zaporizhzhia, the author had personally visited the site before the occupation. This ground-truth knowledge — knowing the layout, the staff, the risks — enabled analysis that no desk analyst could replicate. The occupation of ZNPP is not an isolated event but the culmination of every Disinfolklore mechanism operating simultaneously: Coercive Control (nuclear blackmail), Provocation Logic (self-attacks blamed on Ukraine), Spectacle (staged for media), and War Magic (nuclear threats as deterrence).
