“Let’s not escalate this situation. Please.” Sunflower Woman: “How can it be further escalated? Take these seeds and put them in your pockets. Put the sunflower seeds in your pockets please. So at least sunflowers will grow when you all lie down here. From this moment, you are cursed.”

The Ukrainian Sunflower Woman confronting Russian soldiers on the first day of the invasion became one of the iconic images of resistance. Her words are pure Counter-Disinfolklore: she reverses the power dynamic entirely. The soldier asks for calm; she pronounces a curse. The sunflower seeds are both a prophecy of the soldier’s death and an act of planting — life from death. This is Infolklore at its most potent.
