Challenging Archetypes Against Data

Those of us who look at the data, who parse it carefully… and who understand what is in operation are these archetypes in the back of our minds — bogeymen, great men, small men, weak women, weak children — that these archetypes, which we can use these kinds of expressions to describe, are immanent in the stories and the Disinfolklore and the Counter Disinfolklore that we read. And as the data comes in, as it did for me, from the full-scale invasion, we can begin to challenge these archetypes and understand that they are trying to communicate a sense of inevitability into our minds, which does not match the data.

We always need to measure these archetypes against the data of what actually is happening.

The antidote to data-resistant archetypes: data. The archetypes — bogeymen, great men, damsels — communicate inevitability. But inevitability is a feeling, not a fact. When you measure the archetype against what is actually happening on the ground, the Potemkin facade crumbles. Rearchetyping begins with the courage to look at the data.
