Russophile Experts’ Blind Spot

Would be good if professional “Russophiles” when asked to comment on Ukraine would admit their ignorance. They might even recommend proper Ukraine experts. And explain to editors whose mental models haven’t adjusted to Ukraine actually being a completely different culture that actually Ukraine and Russia need to be completely decoupled.

An early (2023) formulation identifying a specific institutional vector through which data-resistant archetypes propagate: “Russophile” experts asked to comment on Ukraine. The passage diagnoses a media failure — editors whose mental models treat Ukraine as a subset of Russia — and prescribes the remedy: complete decoupling.
