The devastating parenthetical: “(formerly known as ‘voters’).” That is what spectacle accomplishes. It transforms citizens with political agency into consumers of entertainment. Voters become spectators. The Political Realm becomes the Entertainment Realm. And in the Entertainment Realm, you have no power — only popcorn.
