The Distancing Manoeuvre

Disinfolklore often operates in this mode. It’s a distancing manoeuvre by the manipulator who authors the tale to pretend the story has just spontaneously arisen from inside the community/of the folk. This is the opposite of the phenomenon of folklore collectors across Europe traipsing around peasants’ cabins earnestly attempting to gather up the storehouse of recorded values nestling inside legends collected from the folk before they are lost.
