Data-Resistant Archetypes

By Archetyping in this context I’m speaking about an aspect of cognition. We model the world, our context. Our mental ideals help us navigate. We create stereotypes. Aggregates of phenomena become archetyped as ‘this’ or ‘that.’ Then new data is bounced off these archetypes which in most cases are fluid and dynamic. Sometimes though we form what I call ‘data resistant archetypes.’

Let’s look at three of the most data resistant archetypes of the Potemkin State that is Duncey Putin’s Russia today:

“Russia is invincible. Russia is indispensable. Russia has the right to determine its neighbouring countries’ destinies.”

You will see these archetypes immanent (literally: their Mana is occupying them like a translucent ghost) in zillions of memes. When the US defence secretary or Druidey Don himself says Ukraine must sacrifice Crimea, it’s clear they’re animated by this troll: these three Archetypal Identities.

Tool 9 distinguishes between fluid archetypes (which update when new data arrives) and “data-resistant archetypes” (which resist all evidence). Russia invincible, Russia indispensable, Russia’s right to dominate its neighbours — these three archetypes persist despite Ukraine’s battlefield performance demonstrating all three to be false. Data-resistant archetypes are the most dangerous product of Disinfolklore.
