Little Green Men

The founding case study of modern Disinfolklore. In 2014, Russia concealed its military occupation of Crimea, Donetsk, and Luhansk behind a folkloristic troll: soldiers without insignia were called “Little Green Men” and “Polite Folk” — diminutive, whimsical names that made a military invasion sound like a fairy tale. This case study (Book Chapter 6) demonstrates how Tool 1: Archetypal Literacy detects the folkloristic framing that disarms critical thinking.

  • The origin story — standing on a bridge in eastern Ukraine, the author recognised that Russia was weaponising the same archetypes we encounter as children in fairy tales. The cute names were the weapon. This was the moment the analytical method was born.

  • Code of Positive Trolls — “Little Green Men” fails all six criteria, cited alongside “Small Boat People” and “bloodlines being poisoned” as canonical Disinfolklore.
