Prigozhin Coup Forecast
On 26 May 2023, the author published “Putin’s Chef Problem,” predicting that Prigozhin would attempt a coup. Three weeks later, on 23-24 June 2023, the Wagner mutiny happened. This case study demonstrates that Tool 1: Archetypal Literacy is not merely analytical but predictive: the same Indo-European archetypes that create Disinfolklore also constrain the behaviour of those who deploy it.

Key Themes
- The prediction: 26 May 2023 — published three weeks before the Wagner mutiny on 23-24 June. Not based on intelligence sources, but on recognising the archetype: the Sorcerer’s Apprentice has grown too powerful. See Chief Sorcerer & Chef Saucerer.
- The Plight of the Sorcerer — one of the oldest Indo-European stories. The master empowers the apprentice, the apprentice outgrows the master, and the master must either cede power or destroy what he created. This mythological engine drove the prediction.
- The Mahabharata solution — the ancient text scripts the resolution: a negotiated deal where both survive. On 24 June 2023, precisely this happened — Prigozhin’s march on Moscow ended with a deal brokered by Lukashenko. The mythology predicted not only the crisis but the form of its resolution.
- Dumézil’s three functions — sovereignty/magic (Disinfolklore mastery), warrior (military credentials), fertility/prosperity (economic power). By mid-2023, the Chef had demonstrated all three. The archetype was complete — the succession crisis was inevitable.
- Bakhmut as succession test — Bakhmut was supposed to be the Chef’s Chechnya: an easy military victory establishing warrior credentials. Ukraine’s fierce defence turned it into a catastrophic grind, accelerating the internal power struggle.
- Why Russia experts missed it — conventional Kremlinology, operating within the Disinfolklore it was supposed to analyse, saw Prigozhin as a “mere mercenary.” Archetypal Literacy saw the Sorcerer’s Apprentice — a figure whose trajectory was millennia old.
- “In sparse data” — the author detected the archetype with less information than the FSB or Kremlinologists had. The archetype was visible because it was a millennia-old pattern. You only need to recognise the shape.
- Reflexive control works both ways — Ukraine’s strategy at Bakhmut exploited the Sorcerer-Apprentice dynamics, wearing down Wagner while stoking tensions that made the coup inevitable. Counter-Disinfolklore in action.
- Tools demonstrated — Tool 1 (recognising the Plight of the Sorcerer in sparse data), Tool 3 (three Dumézilian functions as energy driving succession), Tool 8 (the “Right” to rule as the stake), Tool 9 (archetypes immanent in the succession dynamics).
