The Literal and Metaphorical Bridge
For my first three years in Ukraine, I had worked as a peace-keeping diplomat on a bridge over the Donets River in eastern Ukraine. That wooden and iron bridge was the only pedestrian crossing place between Russia-occupied Luhansk and the rest of Ukraine. That river was also a contact zone between ancient Ukraine’s first Indo-European language speaking Yamnaya communities and the last tribes of Old Europe.

THE bridge is both literal (Stanytsia Luhanska peacekeeping) AND metaphorical (Yamnaya/Old Europe contact zone). The same river crossing where the author negotiated daily ceasefires with Russian bridge trolls was also the ancient boundary between two civilisations. Finding Manuland and Disinfolklore were born on the same bridge.
